How To Approach Boat Transport

March 2, 2012 by Logan B Leave a Comment

So you have to move a boat on dry land. Now what? You may have purchased the boat from another location, you may be moving across the country or need to sell it to someone who’s landlocked. The point is that you need to hire a boat transport, but if you don’t know where to begin or what to expect here are a few things to keep in mind.

First and foremost you want to check out the person’s reputation. There are independent shippers who have frequent dealings with logistics companies that can vouch for their credibility or they may even have an online presence where people have left feedback on their experience with the shipper.

Once you’ve selected a reputable shipper make sure that you agree upon a set price and conditions. Some drivers will charge by the mile and others will have a bundled price. Get a signed and dated contract and you’re good to go.

Make sure that you lay eyes on a copy of their insurance and depending upon your region, Department of Transportation Authorization paperwork.

The next step will be to notify the marina that the boat is leaving from and the marina to which it will be arriving. They will probably want to be part of the unloading process, so they’ll need to be appropriately staffed for that day.

The Internet has managed to simplify this process a great deal and make it possible for people to find reliable boat transport pretty much wherever the need arises. Just make sure that you cover all of your bases and get everything in writing and you shouldn’t run into any problems.
