I have recently stumbled across an amazing website, sailx.com. It is a virtual sailing simulator.
Despite the very simple graphics, this game is an amazing resource for learning how to fleet race, match race, and team race.
It is an interactive game, where you compete against other sailors for the most points. It is based on the high-score system, unlike regular collegiate fleet racing which is the low-score system.
One of the things that makes this game so amazing, is the penalty and rule feature. When you breach a rule or foul someone, it gives you a penalty and the rule that was broken. You are able to exonerate yourself by doing a 360 just like in real sailing.
I have been sailing and racing for most of my life, and I have a natural concept of the rules, but I don't always know the rule numbers.

This is where this game is great.

When you are penalized it shows you the rule number and the name of the rule. It familiarizes even the most familiar sailor with the rules. It has definitely helped me in real life sailing when I am protesting someone, because I actually know the rule numbers now (this gives you a great advantage especially when you are sailing against sailors who have less experience than you! It makes you seem confident as well as correct).
Also, the wind, current, and boat speed are so realistic that it is hard sometimes to remember that your are just playing a game.

This game definitely gets 2 thumbs up, and has successfully taken over my life.
