Why Phuket is the Next Big Yachting Destination

September 18, 2012 by superuser Leave a Comment

Perhaps the single most idyllic holiday destination on planet earth, the Thai island of Phuket is one of Asia’s most captivating destinations. Amongst Phuket’s considerable charms are the peace and quiet of island life, the tropical rainforests that hug gravity defying mountains, the golden beaches that stretch to infinity, the warm waters that maintain a crystal clear clarity, the aromas of wonderful street food that can be found in every town, and the sheer warmth of the friendly locals who always go out of their way to make sure your stay at their piece of paradise is as magical as possible. And the latest attraction to add to the list is that Phuket is quickly becoming a major international centre for yachting, rivalling Florida, Monte Carlo and the Amalfi Coast. Here is a look at why Phuket is the world’s next big yachting destination.

.

Asian Boat Buying

While the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Baltic seas currently lead the world for boat ownership, Asia’s rapidly growing economies are busy buying up boats. No more are super yachts solely to be found in exclusive marinas in Europe and America, instead you are just as likely to find luxury vessels in Singapore, Hong Kong and Hainan. And this burgeoning class of wealthy boat owners in the far-east are increasingly turning to Phuket for the most luxurious yachting holidays available. Mooring their yachts in shallow, azure waters and feeling the tropical ocean breeze on their skin, it is not difficult to see why Phuket is becoming so popular. And the options for luxury boat charters here is also increasing, meaning you too can sample a bit of the high life when visiting this astounding destination.

Incredible Scenery

Phuket really exemplifies the idealised image of a tropical Asian retreat better than anywhere else on the continent. Pillars of rock rise abruptly from the turquoise waters, thickets of jungle perched on their top, all overlooking a hidden beach of almost impossible beauty. Swaying palm trees provide shade as you rest in your hammock, coconuts falling from heavy branches to provide hydration with their fresh, delicious milk. Every now and then a colourful parrot swoops overhead as the blood red sun sets, casting lurid rays across the cloudless sky and onto the jagged forms of hills and mountains. After a couple of days here, visitors all agree that Phuket really is paradise.

Value for Money

Despite its immense popularity Phuket never really feels over-crowded, perhaps because it is so isolated, and as a result it is still relatively inexpensive. Your money goes a long way here, whether eating at great restaurants or shelling out for a bareboat charter to take you out into the calm waters of the sea. Whereas many of the world’s top marinas are achingly expensive, a week or two with your vessel moored at one of Phuket’s well maintained ports will prove surprisingly affordable.

A Tropical Climate

Of course it helps that Phuket’s weather is nigh on perfect, with hot mornings ideal for walks on the beach, light rains cooling the air at lunch-time, and sultry evenings where one can linger lazily deep into the night. Whether you want to relax on deck, on the beach or in a beer garden, the weather here is guaranteed to be great. And with seas shielded from much of the worst weather that the rest of South-East Asia experienced, especially on Phuket’s mild east coast, you do not have to be an experienced sailor to navigate these waters.

Summer Time Fun on the Water

April 10, 2012 by superuser Leave a Comment

When it’s hot in the summer many people like to participate in activities that take place on the water. Most of them do these activities at the beach or on a lake. The following are some of these fun water activities.

Jet Skis:

A jet ski is a water vehicle that runs via jet-propeller. It is ridden similar to the way a motorcycle is ridden and it skims across the surface of the water. They typically hold two people and are a great deal of fun.

Some companies that make motorcycles also make jet skis. Some of the popular brands are Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Honda. The price will vary in price based on the brand, the year it was made and the condition. The average price for a new jet ski is about $10,000 to $13,000 however, the price can go up to about $15,000.

Don’t worry though, with today’s economy many people cannot afford to buy a jet ski due to their high end prices. Thankfully, there are often times Jet Ski rental stores near most main beaches. When you rent you only have to pay an hourly fee so it will be much more affordable.

Water Skiing:

Water skiing is a water sport that is enjoyed by many individuals and families. This water sport involves the participant being pulled by a boat on a cable ski installation. The skis then skim across the surface of the water while the person holds onto the handle of the cable connected to the back of the boat while standing on the skis.

The average speed of water skiers is anywhere from 20 to 40 miles per hour, depending on how experienced you are at the sport.

Power Boats:

Power boats are great for skiing, wake surfing, fishing, and just cruising. They come in all sizes, styles, and price ranges depending on your personal need. They can have cabins with sleeping quarters (cruisers) or open air without a cabin. Prices vary depending on new, used, size, and styles. Before you buy a boat be sure to take the proper boating courses and equip your craft with safety equipment.

Yachts:

A yacht is a boat that is very luxurious. This type of boat usually has an indoor cabin for the passengers to enjoy. There are some very useful amenities that are inside the cabin. The amenities have changed quite a bit over the years due to the advance in technology and luxury.

Some of the amenities that you may see today are televisions which sometimes come with satellite, DVD and Blu-ray players, or gaming devices. They may also include a kitchen that is suitable for you during your travels, a bed or bedroom, and some of the very luxurious yachts will even include a fitness center with the main fitness equipment.

Many people, including families, enjoy taking their vacation on their yacht which is partially the reason for all of these amenities. However, the amount and quality of these luxuries will often depend on the size of the cabin. Prices of these boats vary based on brand, amenities, and how luxurious. Just like jet skis, most of the popular coastal regions will have yacht rental companies so that you can experience this luxury without the high price tag.

These are just a few of the water activities that are extremely fun, especially in the summer time. All of these activities are great for families to experience during vacation or on a hot day. Some other activities are fishing, speed boats, surfing, and so on. So when summer time comes along and you want to enjoy some fun on the water, you can then use the above activities as suggestions for you and your family.

How To Approach Boat Transport

March 2, 2012 by Logan B Leave a Comment

So you have to move a boat on dry land. Now what? You may have purchased the boat from another location, you may be moving across the country or need to sell it to someone who’s landlocked. The point is that you need to hire a boat transport, but if you don’t know where to begin or what to expect here are a few things to keep in mind.

First and foremost you want to check out the person’s reputation. There are independent shippers who have frequent dealings with logistics companies that can vouch for their credibility or they may even have an online presence where people have left feedback on their experience with the shipper.

Once you’ve selected a reputable shipper make sure that you agree upon a set price and conditions. Some drivers will charge by the mile and others will have a bundled price. Get a signed and dated contract and you’re good to go.

Make sure that you lay eyes on a copy of their insurance and depending upon your region, Department of Transportation Authorization paperwork.

The next step will be to notify the marina that the boat is leaving from and the marina to which it will be arriving. They will probably want to be part of the unloading process, so they’ll need to be appropriately staffed for that day.

The Internet has managed to simplify this process a great deal and make it possible for people to find reliable boat transport pretty much wherever the need arises. Just make sure that you cover all of your bases and get everything in writing and you shouldn’t run into any problems.

Quality Protein for Sports

January 30, 2012 by superuser Leave a Comment

Why am I talking about my local butcher in Pyrford?

Ever wondered how important diet is for Sailors? Well of course it is. Just as any sport you need to respect your body by making sure you use to quality food as fuel.

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. And that is so true. After a hard days sailing, we all come ashore ready to eat a horse. But of course, being British we don’t do that sort of thing.

But for the non vegetarians amongst us, we need to stock up on quaility meat protein as well as carbs to help rebuild our energy levels. Whether that is a fun day sailing on the lake of a bit or a bigger cross ocean excursion.

We are very luck to have a quality butcher here in Pyrford, what has surprised me now I shop at the Pyrford Butchers that for a few pennies more you can get meat that is fantastically better than at the supermarkets.

Obviously, this is a blog about sailing, not my local Pyrford Butchers, but as sailing as a sport, requires physical well being. generally the fitter you are, the better you perform. Fitness for sailing is a whole new chapter and covers both mind and body fitness. Both mind and body is fueled by food, so there you have the link.

Some people take the approach that they can use protein supplements, but frankly they don’t taste as nice as a good bit of sirloin steak, do they? And there is so much difference between that stringy tough stuff they sell in supermarkets and properly raised meat. Go on, you no you deserve it. You’d be surprised at the difference.

Long live the local shops and long live Pyrford Butchers. Keep us well fed so we can sail well!
